A 12-string guitar with fresh strings delivers that signature shimmering, full-bodied tone—but keeping it in top form takes extra precision. Old strings not only lose brightness, they can make tuning stability even more challenging. For optimal tone and playability, restringing every few months (or more often if you play regularly) is recommended. At Guitar Setup & Repair, a 12-string restring includes: removing old strings, cleaning and conditioning the fretboard, polishing frets, carefully installing and stretching each string pair, checking intonation and tuning stability, and a final full-body polish. As a lifelong guitarist, I take special care with the added complexity of 12-strings—balancing tension perfectly to preserve that unmistakable chime. Strings purchased separately.
